Camp Shindand is a military base located in the western part of Afghanistan in the Herat province, near the city of Shindand. The base was initially established by the Soviet Union during their occupation of Afghanistan, and after they withdrew, it was taken over by Afghan forces. During the U.S. and NATO operations in Afghanistan, Camp Shindand was again repurposed and expanded.
Camp Shindand is one of the largest bases in Afghanistan, with a runway stretching over three kilometers, making it suitable for all types of aircraft. Given its strategic location, it served as a hub for operations in western Afghanistan.
The base was home to various units throughout the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan. It was notably the location of the Afghan Air Force’s 2nd Wing and was used by the U.S. Army’s 1st Battalion, 214th Aviation Regiment for their operations. In addition, Special Operations forces, including various U.S. and NATO units, used the base due to its strategic location.
Facilities at Camp Shindand included hangars for aircraft, housing for military personnel, an operations center, and training facilities. The base was equipped to support the personnel stationed there, maintaining their operational readiness and morale during their deployment.
