2001
- Uzbekistan’s President Islam A. Karimov agrees to allow the United States to
use the airfield at Karshi Khanabad Air Base for operations in Afghanistan.
2004
- More than 3,000 U.S. and Iraqi troops, including the 24th MEU, launched an offensive operation in the southern approaches to Baghdad and took control of a bridge across the Euphrates River. Numerous weapons caches were discovered and 35,000 pounds of explosives were destroyed.

2005
- End of Operation River Gate (Bawwabatu Annaher) in Iraq
2006
- Hawaii-based 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, arrived home after spending almost seven-months in the western Iraqi province of Al Anbar in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Eleven Marines died during the deployment.
- NATO assumed leadership for international military operations throughout Afghanistan, building on the efforts of the U.S. led-coalition to extend the authority of the Afghan government and create the conditions needed for reconstruction and development within the country.
