- The Battle of Tora Bora starts in a cave complex in Eastern Afghanistan’s White Mountains in an attempt to capture or kill Osama bin Laden. The battle will last until December 17, 2001.

- Operation Clear Area in Iraq
2004
- The Marines and sailors of the 15th MEU departed aboard the amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard as part of the Expeditionary Strike Group 5. The 15th MEU, based at Camp Pendleton, California, was bound for the Western Pacific and the Persian Gulf area.
- Operation Soprano Sunset in Iraq
2006
- Maj Megan McClung, a 1995 Naval Academy graduate, became the first female Marine officer to be killed in Iraq. Maj McClung was serving as a public affairs officer with I MEF when she was killed by a roadside bomb near the town of Ramadi. She was the fifth female Marine to die in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
