ANSF, Coalition forces disrupt IED activities in western Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces, assisted by Coalition forces, killed two militants and detained two others Friday in Shindand District, Heart province, in far western Afghanistan.

During the early morning raid, Afghan National Army Commandos targeted a safe house used by a suspected improvised explosive device cell operating in the Zer-e-koh Valley. The safe house served as a storage facility for weapons, munitions and IEDs.

During the operation, Commandos were engaged by militants from multiple positions. Commandos responded with precision fire, killing two militants. No further resistance was encountered as Commandos detained two militants and recovered Taliban-related documents, AK-47 assault rifles, ammunition and ammunition-carrying vests.

During the operation, 42 men, women and children were safeguarded. Following the operation, Commandos met with village leadership to explain the operation and methods used.

No ANSF, Coalition forces or civilian casualties have been reported.

“Continuing to take down IED cells is critical work by the ANSF,” said Col. Jerry O’Hara, U.S. Forces Afghanistan spokesman. “The more enemy IED cells they put out of business the safer Afghanistan becomes.”
