Anita M. Carpenter Tapped for Air Force Academy Review Panel
June 26, 2003

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld today announced that Anita M. Carpenter has been selected to serve on the congressional-mandated seven-member panel to review sexual misconduct allegations at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

As chief executive officer of the Indiana Coalition Against Sexual Assault for the past four years, Carpenter has been a strong advocate for victims of sexual assault. In that position, she created the first homeless youth and sexual violence campaign to reach at-risk and homeless children. In addition, she has reviewed rape crisis procedures for the Indiana public school systems.

The panel, chaired by former Florida congresswoman Tillie K. Fowler, is conducting a study of the policies, management and organizational practices and cultural elements of the Academy that may have been conducive to alleged sexual misconduct, including sexual assaults and rape. A report of findings, conclusions and recommendations will be submitted to the Secretary of Defense and the Chairmen of the Senate and House Armed Services Committees upon completion of the study. That report is due by Sept. 22, 2003.
