Mattis takes command of CENTCOM Aug. 11

MACDILL AFB, Fla. (Aug. 10, 2010) – Marine Gen. James N. Mattis is scheduled to assume command of U.S. Central Command from Acting Commander Lt. Gen. John R. Allen here at 6 p.m., Aug. 11 in a ceremony officiated by the Secretary of Defense, the Honorable Robert M. Gates, at the Lt. Cmdr. Otis Vincent Tolbert Joint Intelligence Operations Center.
Mattis most recently commanded U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Va. from 2007 to present. From 2007 to 2009, he also concurrently served as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation. During Operation Enduring Freedom, he commanded the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade and Task Force 58 in Southern Afghanistan. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, he commanded the 1st Marine Division. Prior to his tenure at Joint Forces Command, he commanded the Marine Corps Combat Development Command, followed by the I Marine Expeditionary Force and the U.S. Marine Forces Central Command.
