Schoolchildren visit radio station in Shahidi Hassas
KABUL, Afghanistan – A local radio station hosted a field trip for schoolchildren in the Shahidi Hassas district, Oruzgan Province, Jan. 4.
Radio station employees gave the 50 schoolchildren, who ranged from ages five to 14, a tour of the radio station that included demonstrations of how to use some of the radio equipment.
Many of the children had the opportunity to have their songs, poems and readings of Koran verses broadcast to the station’s surrounding residents.
Some of the students also spoke to the people about the importance and benefits of having an education.
While some students were showcasing the skills they had learned from their schooling, others were listening to their peers’ voices on a small radio in a nearby room.
“The children, like everywhere else, are the future of Afghanistan. The radio program is a great example of Afghans doing for themselves,” said Col. Jerry O’Hara, a U.S. Forces spokesman. “Activities like this lift the hopes of all who are involved in Afghanistan’s future.”
