Statement by Commander, U.S. Central Command on Afghanistan Transition

TAMPA, Fla. – Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, commander of U.S. Central Command, released the following statement today:

“The Afghan National Security Forces have made remarkable progress over the past year. They have proven to be incredibly capable at the tactical level, successfully securing several high profile events to include their national elections. I am confident that they will get even stronger and more capable in the coming years, and our continued conditional presence, as announced today by President Obama, will enable us to help them to mature the key sustainment systems and methods that are critical to their long-term success. I am enormously proud of our troops, civilians, and all those who have sacrificed and worked hard to secure the gains achieved in Afghanistan over the past 12-plus years. It is a strategically important area, and we look forward to continuing to work with our coalition and Afghan partners in our shared pursuit of a stable and sovereign Afghanistan and a more secure region.”
