DoD Identifies Army Casualty

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Capt. Shane R. Mahaffee, 36, of Alexandria, Va., died on May 15, in Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, of injuries sustained on May 5, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat patrol operations in Al Hillah, Iraq. Mahaffee was assigned to the Army Reserve’s 489th Civil Affairs Battalion, Knoxville, Tenn.
