February 01

3 views 0 May 9, 2023 Updated on June 17, 2023

The following are events related to the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT) that took place on this day.

2003

  • An opening ceremony kicked off the Georgian Train and Equip Program (GTEP) which will have U.S. Marines in the country of Georgia for more than a year. Marines are scheduled to train a total of four battalions that will help the republic form its own anti-terrorist units for actions against militants believed to be linked to the al-Qaida network and holed up in the rugged border region near Russia’s breakaway republic of Chechnya.

2004

  • End of Operation Final Cut in Iraq.
  • U.S. Army III Corps staff replaces V Corps personnel at CJTF-7, with Lt. Gen. Thomas Metz becoming General Sanchez’s deputy. Responsibility for As Sulaymaniyah Province transferred from Multi-National Division-North (MND-N) to Multi-National Division North Central (MND-NC), with the former command redesignated Multi-National Division-Northwest (MND-NW).

2008

  • The Marine Corps subpoenaed outtakes from a “60 Minutes” TV interview given by SSgt Frank Wuterich, the Marine squad leader accused of leading a group of Camp Pendleton Marines in the killing of 24 Iraqi civilians in Haditha on 19 November 2005. CBS News, producers of “60 Minutes,” refused to turn over the tapes. Two weeks later, it was also announced that LCpl Stephen Tatum would be ordered to testify against his former squad leader despite still facing charges in the case.
