Firebase Morehead was a military base in Afghanistan, established and operated by the United States Special Forces, primarily the Green Berets. Located near the city of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan, Firebase Morehead was named in honor of Sergeant First Class Thomas Morehead, a Green Beret who was killed in action in 2006.
The base served as a key site for U.S. Special Forces operations in the region, particularly in the fight against the Taliban and other insurgent groups. Firebase Morehead was smaller and more specialized than a typical military base, reflecting the unique mission and operational style of the Special Forces.
The Green Berets at Firebase Morehead were deeply involved in training and advising Afghan local police and commandos, an integral part of the U.S. strategy in Afghanistan. These operations were aimed at empowering local security forces to take on the Taliban and other threats, enhancing the stability and security of the region.
Life at Firebase Morehead was austere compared to larger bases. While basic facilities such as housing, dining, and medical care were available, the remote location and specialized mission of the base meant that conditions were often more challenging than at larger, more established bases.
Over time, as part of the U.S. and NATO drawdown in Afghanistan, many bases, including Firebase Morehead, were closed or handed over to Afghan security forces. The legacy of these bases, and the impact of their operations, are part of the complex history of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan.
