Forward Operating Base (FOB) Hammer was a United States military installation located in the Besmaya region, about 50 kilometers southeast of Baghdad, Iraq. It was one of the many bases established by the U.S. military following the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
As a Forward Operating Base, FOB Hammer served as a secured forward military positioned base that supports tactical operations during a war. These bases are typically used for troop housing, tactical operations, and logistical support.
FOB Hammer was a significant base due to its strategic location near the Iraqi capital. This allowed U.S. and coalition forces to conduct operations and respond to developments in this critical area effectively.
Several different units were stationed at FOB Hammer throughout its years of operation. Among them were elements of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, commonly known as the “Raiders,” and the 3rd Sustainment Brigade. These units carried out various operations, including counterinsurgency missions, patrols, and training of Iraqi forces, contributing to the overall mission of stabilizing the region.
The facilities at FOB Hammer included not only housing and dining facilities for the troops but also training areas, operations centers, and logistics facilities. Despite being located in a challenging environment, the base was equipped to support the personnel stationed there, maintaining their morale and readiness during their deployment.
