Ginther was killed on May 2 at Camp Fallujah in the Al Anbar province near Ramadi. He was among dozens of Seabees gathered in the yard of a Marine base for a visit from Rear Adm. Charles Kubic. One mortar round struck about 300 yards away, but the second made a near direct hit. Ginther, four other Seabees and an Army soldier were killed.
