Kandahar Airfield, also known as Kandahar Air Base, is located in the southeastern part of Afghanistan, approximately 16 kilometers southeast of Kandahar City. It is one of the largest military bases built and used by the U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan during the War in Afghanistan that started in 2001.
The airfield was originally constructed in the 1960s, during a period of modernization for the country. Kandahar Airfield has a long runway, which is capable of handling large aircraft, including military cargo planes. This made it a strategic asset during the conflict.
Following the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, the airfield was renovated and expanded. It quickly became a hub for operations in the southern and eastern parts of the country. It was used for a variety of purposes, including as a launch point for airstrikes, a training center for Afghan forces, and a hub for logistical operations.
The airfield was also used as a base for drone operations and for medical evacuations. It housed thousands of military personnel, contractors, and other staff. The base was essentially a small town, complete with dining facilities, shops, recreational activities, and accommodation units.
In addition to its military functions, Kandahar Airfield played a significant role in humanitarian operations. It was used as a hub for the distribution of humanitarian aid and as a location for medical facilities treating both military personnel and local Afghan civilians.
Kandahar Airfield was handed over to Afghan security forces in May 2021 as part of the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces from Afghanistan. However, with the rapid advance of the Taliban that led to their takeover of the country in August 2021, the airfield fell under their control.
