The following are events related to the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT) that took place on this day.

2002

  • The Department of Defense announced that service members on active duty on or after 11 September 2001, were eligible to receive the National Defense Service Medal. The medal would also be awarded to members of the reserve components ordered to federal active duty, regardless of duration, except for certain categories. President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the National Defense Service Medal 22 April 1953. It had subsequently been awarded for honorable active service for any period between 27 June 1950 and 27 July 1954, the period between 1 January 1961 and 14 August 1974, and between 2 August 1990 and 30 November 1995.

2003

  • The 26th MEU(SOC) departed Mosul and returned to its ships in the Mediterranean.
  • President George W. Bush declared victory in Iraq after making a historic landing on the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln as it cruised off the coast near San Diego, California. The president arrived as the co-pilot of a S-3B Viking jet.

2006

  • End of Operation Babil Perimeter in Iraq

2007

  • Operation Polar Scrum in Iraq
  • Operation Rat Trap in Iraq
  • End of Operation Dragon Fire East in Iraq

2011

  • The number one Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is killed by U.S. Navy SEALs in Abbottabad, Pakistan, just miles from Islamabad.  President Obama addresses the Nation on May 02.
