The following are events related to the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT) that took place on this day.

2002

  • Start of Operation Snipe in Afghanistan

2003

  • Abd al-Tawab Mullah Huwaysh captured. He was the 10 of Hearts in Iraq’s Most Wanted Deck of Playing Cards.
  • Taha Muhyi Al-Din Maruf captured. He was the 9 of Diamonds in Iraq’s Most Wanted Deck of Playing Cards.

2005

  • Marines with the 26th MEU entered the Persian Gulf area. The MEU deployed from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and included Marines with Battalion Landing Team 2d Battalion, 8th Marines, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 162, and MEU Service Support Group 26.
  • Two Marine F-18 fighter jets collided over Iraq, killing both pilots. The planes had launched from the USS Carl Vinson in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and were part of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323.

2007

  • Start of Operation Eagle Thunder III in Iraq

2011

  • President Obama addresses the Nation on the death of Bin Laden
