The following are events related to the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT) that took place on this day.

2004

  • Secretary of the Navy Gordon R. England presented awards to three Marines from 2d Battalion, 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton for actions during the initial invasion phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in early 2003. Sgt Marco A. Martinez received the Navy Cross, while SSgt Adam R. Sikes and Cpl Timothy C. Tardif both received Silver Stars. Secretary England also presented the widow of GySgt Jeffrey E. Bohr Jr. with a posthumous Silver Star.

2005

  • Operation Clear Decision in Iraq.
  • End of Operation Outer Banks in Iraq.
  • Iraq’s first democratically elected government takes office, with Shi’ite Arab leader Ibraham al-Ja’afari sworn in as prime minister, leading a cabinet of 27 ministers that consist of 15 Shi’ite Arabs, 7 Kurds, 4 Sunnies, and 1 Christian.
