U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Michael J. McMahon was born on October 23, 1963, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and raised in West Hartford. LTC McMahon was killed on November 27, 2004. He was the son of retired Lt. Col. Dennis McMahon and Elizabeth McMahon. Michael completed his high school education at Conard High School in 1981 and later graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1985, upon which he was commissioned into the aviation branch. He and his wife, Jeanette, who also held the rank of lieutenant colonel, were parents to three children.

Throughout his career, McMahon served in various roles both in the United States and abroad, including in Europe and Korea. He led the 3rd Squadron, 4th U.S. Cavalry and commanded Task Force Saber in Afghanistan. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing provincial reconstruction teams that supported security and reconstruction efforts in the cities of Herat and Farah. LTC McMahon was killed in Afghanistan when the aircraft carrying troops he was on crashed into a mountain ridge.
