The following are events related to the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT) that took place on this day.

2001

  • Alpha Team 586 inserts north of Taluqan; Alpha Team 594 inserts north of Bagram.

2002

  • The U.N. Security Council adopted Resolution 1441. This resolution found Iraq in breach of past U.N. resolutions prohibiting stockpiling and importing weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). The Hussein government in Iraq continued to be uncooperative with U.N. investigators, which heightened the situation through spring 2003.

2004

  • The largest military operation since the opening days of Operation Iraqi Freedom got underway just after sunset as thousands of U.S. and Iraqi troops pushed into the insurgent-held city of Fallujah. The city had been in rebel control since April after the Marine Corps was instructed to halt all offensives. Operation Phantom Fury began the evening after the Iraqi interim president declared martial law on the city and surrounding area.
