The following are events related to the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT) that took place on this day.

2001

  • The Taliban abandons Mazar-e-Sharif. General Dostum’s troops and U.S. Special Forces enter the city

2003

  • Operation Boothill in Iraq

2004

  • Major Clarke Paulus was acquitted of the two most serious charges of assault and battery in connection to the death of an Iraqi detainee at the Marine detention facility Camp Whitehorse in June 2003. He was found guilty of maltreatment and dereliction of duty. Sentencing was yet to be decided.
  • Start of Battle of Mosul in Iraq
  • David Bellavia, Army, Staff Sergeant, is the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on November 10, 2004.

2006

  • President George W. Bush announced that Cpl Jason L. Dunham, a Marine who died of combat wounds in April 2004, would be the first Marine to receive the nation’s highest military decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his actions while serving in Iraq. Cpl Dunham died protecting other Marines from a grenade released by an Iraqi insurgent. The presentation of the medal to his family was expected to take place in early 2007.
