2005

  • The Marine Corps issued a recall of more than 10,000 combat vests that did not pass ballistic requirements when manufactured. MarAdmin 544/05 announced the recall following a Pentagon-initiated review revealed that several lots of vests were accepted and fielded despite originally failing ballistic tests. 5,000 other vests had been recalled in May.
  • Start of Operation Panthers (Numur) in Iraq

2006

  • Approximately 2,200 Marines of the 15th MEU were pulled from ships afloat in the Persian Gulf and began preparation for deployment to the Al Anbar Province in western Iraq. The exact location was not released nor were the specifics of the Marines mission. It was the third time the unit had been sent to Iraq since 2003.
