The following are events related to the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT) that took place on this day.

2003

  • End of Operation O.K. Corral in Iraq

2004

  • Start of Operation Baton Rouge in Iraq.
  • End of Operation Wolfhound Fury in Iraq.
  • Start of Battle of Samarra in Iraq

2005

  • Marines from Regimental Combat Team 2 (RCT-2) launched a major offensive near Iraq’s western border in the Al Anbar province. Operation Iron Fist was aimed at disrupting an important conduit for insurgents suspected of filtering into the country from Syria. Operation River Gate was launched days later on 4 October, also by RCT-2, and centered around the troubled town of Haditha. Both operations lasted approximately a week, resulting in at least eight Marines and sailors killed.

2006

  • End of Operation Commando Hunter in Iraq

2007

  • Start of Operation Harekate Yolo (Front Straightening) in Afghanistan.
  • The Diyala campaign in Iraq ends in a Coalition victory due to the combination of the Coalition victories in the Battle of Baqubah, Operations Phantom Thunder and Operation Phantom Strike-where in August and September, Operation Lightning Hammer I & Operation Lightning Hammer II took place respectively, as part of Operation Phantom Strike which defeated ISI (particularly the elements that fled from Baqubah) and other terrorist cells seeking safe haven throughout the Diyala River Valley. 106 US servicemen were killed, 300 Iraqi security forces were killed and 22 allied Iraqi militia were killed, Over 1,070 terrorists and other insurgents were killed and 500 captured.

2008

  • Marine Corps Forces, Central Command transferred operational control of Marine Corps forces in the Horn of Africa region to the newly established Marine Corps Forces Africa under the fledgling U.S. Africa Command.

2015

  • On October 1, 2015, General John F. Campbell, commander, RSM, U.S. Forces-Afghanistan/ISAF, defined the U.S. military’s objectives: “U.S. forces are now carrying out two well-defined missions: a Counter-Terrorism (CT) mission against the remnants of Al-Qaeda and the Resolute Support TAA mission in support of Afghan security forces. Our CT and TAA efforts are concurrent and complementary. While we continue to attack the remnants of Al-Qaeda, we are also building the ANDSF so that they can secure the Afghan people, win the peace, and contribute to stability throughout the region.”
