The following are events related to the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT) that took place on this day.

2001

  • Uzbekistan’s President Islam A. Karimov agrees to allow the United States to
    use the airfield at Karshi Khanabad Air Base for operations in Afghanistan.

2004

  • More than 3,000 U.S. and Iraqi troops, including the 24th MEU, launched an offensive operation in the southern approaches to Baghdad and took control of a bridge across the Euphrates River. Numerous weapons caches were discovered and 35,000 pounds of explosives were destroyed.
  • Start of Operation Wolfhound Fury in Iraq

2005

  • End of Operation River Gate (Bawwabatu Annaher) in Iraq

2006

  • Hawaii-based 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, arrived home after spending almost seven-months in the western Iraqi province of Al Anbar in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Eleven Marines died during the deployment.
  • NATO assumed leadership for international military operations throughout Afghanistan, building on the efforts of the U.S. led-coalition to extend the authority of the Afghan government and create the conditions needed for reconstruction and development within the country.
