Major Stephen C. Reich (May 22, 1971 – June 28, 2005) was an Army Major and a former Minor League Baseball player who tragically lost his life at 34 during a rescue operation in Afghanistan. In 1993, Reich represented “Team USA” in baseball and holds the record for the most wins by any pitcher in the history of the United States Military Academy.
Major Stephen C. Reich served four tours of duty in Afghanistan, Reich was killed in action on June 28, 2005, while participating in Operation Red Wings, aimed at rescuing a Navy SEAL team consisting of four members. Reich was among the 16 servicemen—comprising 8 Nightstalkers and 8 Navy SEALs—onboard an MH-47 Chinook helicopter, operated by Army Special Operations, which was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in the mountainous region of Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan. The details of this mission are chronicled in Marcus Luttrell’s book, Lone Survivor. At the time, Reich was serving with the 3rd Battalion 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), stationed at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.
