The following are events related to the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT) that took place on this day.

2003

  • The 1st Marine Division battled its way into the southeastern outskirts of the Iraqi capital, encountering the Al Nida Division of the Republican Guard.
  • Paul R. Smith, Army, Sergeant First Class, is the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on April 4, 2003.
  • 101st Airborne Division secures Najaf.

2004

  • Start of Battle of Fallujah(2004) in Iraq
  • I Marine Expeditionary Force commences Operation Vigilant Resolve in Al Fallujah with the intention of regaining control of the city and meets intense resistance.
  • Moqtada al Sadr’s Mahdi Militia launches attacks in Sadr City and in An Najaf, Al Kufah, Al Kut, and Karbala in response to the arrest of one of the cleric’s senior deputies.

2006

  • Start of Operation Hastings in Iraq

2008

  • More than 200 Marines from 3d Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion (3d LAAD) returned to Camp Pendleton from a seven-month deployment to Djibouti, Horn of Africa. The Marines spent the deployment manning checkpoints, conducting joint patrols with the Djibouti army, and completing small civic projects.
