FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SOUTHWEST ASIA – The Coalition congratulates the people of Iraq and Iraqi Security Forces on the successful completion of the first Parliamentary election since Iraq declared the full liberation of its population from Daesh last December.

Iraqi Security Forces’ dedication, bravery and expert planning ensured access to polling sites and a safe election, marking another step toward the lasting defeat of Daesh.

The Government of Iraq’s organization and determination provided the people the opportunity to exercise their self-determination by having their voices heard. Together, Iraqis have strengthened the foundation for a more self-reliant Iraq.

“By exercising their right to vote today, Iraqis have emphatically rejected violent extremism. They have demonstrated their determination to create a different future and establish a more stable, secure and prosperous Iraq,” said Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk II, commanding general of Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve.

The Coalition applauds the bravery of the Iraqi people and security forces. We will continue to work with the elected Government of Iraq and the Iraqi Security Forces to ensure the lasting defeat of Daesh, and help set the conditions that allow the return to normalcy in the nation.
