The following are events related to the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT) that took place on this day.

2001

  • Marines from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), carrying out Operation Swift Freedom, were involved in combat while blocking the roads leading away from the Taliban-controlled city of Kandahar.

2004

  • Hamid Karzai took the oath of office as Afghanistan’s first democratically elected president.
  • President George W. Bush addressed thousands of Marines at Camp Pendleton to thank them for their efforts and service in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. After having lunch in the mess hall, President Bush dismissed the media in order to be completely accessible as he visited with the families of the wounded and fallen Marines and sailors of I MEF.

2005

  • Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Michael W. Hagee, visited the Marines of 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, in Ramadi, Iraq.
  • Start of Operation Skinner(Gashshaa) in Iraq

2006

  • Operation Polar Valor in Iraq

2007

  • Start of Battle of Musa Qala in Afghanistan

2010

  • End of Operation Moshtarak (Together, Joint) in Afghanistan
