2006

  • Start of Operation Smokewagon in Iraq

2007

  • The countries of Azerbaijan, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Tanzania and Tunisia were added to the list of designated areas of eligibility for Marines to receive the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. It was the third time the list of eligible countries has been expanded for the medal since its introduction in 2004.
