2003

  • Ghazi Hammud captured. He was the 2 of Hearts in Iraq’s Most Wanted Deck of Playing Cards.

2004

  • The Marine Corps suffered its first combat casualty in Afghanistan since Operation Enduring Freedom began in October 2001. Cpl Ronald R. Payne’s death came days after the 22d MEU pushed into a region south of Kabul that still harbored Taliban militia and established Forward Operating Base Ripley to support combat and civil-military operations primarily in the Oruzgan province.

2005

  • Start of Operation Matador near the Iraq-Syria border.

2006

  • Operation Lofty Summit in Iraq
  • End of Operation Lightning Blitz in Iraq
